The government has announced that plastic straws and drinks stirrers are to be banned in England from April 2020
Restaurants, bars and pubs will not be able to display plastic straws or automatically hand them out but will be able to provide them on request so that any customers with disabilities or specific medical needs can have access to straws which will also be available from pharmacies.
I think everyone is agreed that there is a universal need to reduce our dependence on single use plastic. The catering industry is both caring and responsible and very capable of implementing these changes voluntarily. The only reason for the ban is so that the government can be seen to be taking some action on this important ecological issue and win some Brownie points with the public……..disappointing.
